Today we are happy to announce a major step in evolving our (image) recognition platform: face detection as a beta service.
The facial detection service detects faces and so-called fiducial points (eyes, nose, mouth) in an image, and shows the head-pose as well. This is best illustrated with an example:
A JSON response returned for one face from the API looks as follows:
The coordinates define the bounding box of the faces, the fiducial points, and the head-pose. If there are many faces in a picture this structure is repeated for each face, of course.
One API to rule them all
Face detection is the first in a series of new recognition services to be added to our platform. Our goal was to come up with a system which makes configuring and combining all kinds of recognition services really easy. For instance you may want to use object recognition for wine labels and facial detection, someone else may just want to use one of both services. In order to allow for this flexibility we designed a service oriented architecture (SOA). In our backend you can subscribe to each of these services with just one click, as shown on the screenshot below:
Each recognition service is internally a web-service. When you make a query, it is passed on to all web services, and the responses are combined. If multiple services are active for a given query key, indeed, the responses are nicely combined in one consolidated response containing all the individual services responses in sub-sections of the JSON structure. This configuration can be done per API key. This way can also have several apps with different keys accessing and combining different services.
Having one single API and the easy selection for all the services is absolutely unique in the market, and we are curious to hear what you think about it.
How can I get started? What does it cost?
The service is currently in private beta, just drop us a mail (support at kooaba dot com) if you want to try it. During beta phase the service is for free. Later there will be a fee per request to the service.
